The repository includes the OpenVPN source code as well as a few other open source projects it makes use of such as the popular OpenSSL project. Technically, Tunnelblick is a Graphical User Interface (GUI) that interfaces with the OpenVPN code. I went ahead and downloaded the latest source repository to take a look. Tunnelblick is released under the GNU General Public License (GPL) and as such all the source code is available. But there are many reasons beyond cost, why a user may want to use an open source client.Ī popular open source OpenVPN client for OS X is Tunnelblick. It is reasonably priced at $9 and there is a 30 day trial for Windows and OS X. A popular proprietary cross platform OpenVPN client is Viscosity. Most VPN services offer their own OS X binaries that will usually support OpenVPN. While OpenVPN runs on OS X there are no official packages for it. Not sure if this will work for everyone, just thought I would put it out there incase it saves someone else a couple days of headaches.OpenVPN is a popular open source VPN protocol and it is cross platform. Tunnelblick now connects to the VPN without error. It would just keep trying to reconnect, and the firewall never showed any connections coming in. Before this, I did install Tunnelblick and it wouldn't connect either. After some more Googling, I found the command to install Rosetta manually (it's supposed to prompt for install the first time you run an app that requires it.)Īfter that finished, I launched OpenVPN and it connected on the first try. I found this page that says OpenVPN requires Rosetta 2. Tried on another M1 machine and it connected on the first try after install. On the OpenVPN server (PfSense router), the logs never show that I'm even hitting the router. It installed fine and I imported my profile that I use on other machines, but it wouldn't connect, just spinning then eventually times out. I came across this thread while trying to figure out why OpenVPN wasn't working on my new Macbook (16" MBP with M1 Pro).
